10:00am - Noon— Behavioral Pediatrics: A Solution for a Major Gap in Child Health Care

Few children in the United States see a counselor, therapist, or behavior analyst for their care but all children see a pediatric provider, usually a pediatrician.  Furthermore, up to 50% of all pediatric visits involve behavioral issues and pediatric providers have neither the time nor training to adequately address them.

This gap in care presents an opportunity for behaviorally oriented professionals willing to fill it.  It is important to note that the behavioral issues that present in pediatric settings run the gamut from common and benign behavior problems in typically developing children to uncommon and malign behavior problems in atypically developing children.

This presentation will describe this gap in care, argue it is a true opportunity, especially for behaviorally oriented providers, define behavioral pediatrics, describe its domains of care and types of interventions and supply multiple clinical examples.
